Happy Easter Blooms!

jfalkner-easter

We’re celebrating Easter in London this year. Though Ella Fitzgerald might sing about loving Paris in the Springtime, for us, London is the place to be in Spring, when blossoms push forward from every corner. Here are a few favourites to wish you a truly lovely Easter.

crocus

It’s the little crocus, with their saffron hearts, that are the first to bring the promise of Spring in Hyde Park.

magnolia

The fragile beauty of magnolias, glowing here in the setting sun (above), is so fleeting, especially when London rains arrive.

cherryblossom

It’s hard to believe this explosion of cherry blossoms were actually so pink, but there they were one afternoon in Hyde Park.

whiteblossoms

Walton Place (above), with its white-blossomed trees a perfect compliment to the creamy white stucco buildings, is one of London’s most perfect little streets.

bluebells

And this morning we spied bluebells pushing up against the iron grating in Hyde Park, just in time for Easter.

We feel spoiled to find such a beautiful spectrum of colors over the course of a few days, and are reminded of Oscar Wilde’s quote: “The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.” Happy Easter!

Going Green on St Pat’s!
March 17th, 2014

jfalkner-notebooks2-hr

You want some St. Pat’s green? You got it. While we don’t (yet) have a specific St. Patrick’s Day card, that doesn’t mean we neglect green. In fact, a rich bright green is one of the signatures colors here at J.Falkner Cards.

We have a chartreuse notebook, chirping away (see above).

jf-notepad-busybee

We have a buzzy green notepad, gathering all your to-dos.

cq-different

And, of course, we have many green-colored cards, including this one with a quote from Coco Chanel (above).

jfalkner-enclosures1

We even have little green cards, like this Bee’s Knees enclosure card (above) which measures just 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches — the perfect size to adorn a little gift, or hostess present.

Find all our cards here, because though St Patrick’s Day comes but one day a year, we believe in celebrating green all year round.

A Big Kiss on Valentine’s Day!
February 13th, 2014

jfalkner-mwah

Happy Valentines Day! Today’s the day to reach out to those near and dear — and, for us, that definitely means you readers.

Valentines is the unofficial kick-off to the Spring card season. Lest we forget: Easter (April 13), Mothers Day (May 11, in Australia, Canada and the US; in the UK, it’s 30 March), Fathers Day (15 June; here the UK, US and Canada agree) and graduations in June.

But don’t feel overwhelmed, for help is at hand: we just happen to have cards for each one of these occasions. Have a little browse here. (To my own family, I caution: spoiler alert!)

Get a jump and choose your cards now and, not only will you have peace of mind, we’ll give you free shipping on your order until the end of February. Just use the code FREESHIP. It’s our little “mwah!” to you on Valentines Day.

Are you a note taker, or a list maker?
January 29th, 2014

Is it possible the world divides as neatly as this? Do some of us take notes, while others make lists?

jf-notepads-pair

What I do know — unequivocally — is that a splendid alchemy occurs when you put your thoughts down on actual paper. Ideas become clearer, and tasks seem less intimidating. A good list is nothing less than an “antidote to confusion” (a Maira Kalman expression I’ve long adored).

In fact, we have a friend who has been known to write down a task already accomplished, for the pure pleasure of checking it off a to-do list. (Ok, that friend is us.)

jf-notepad-giraffe2

For the note taker, we have an elegant giraffe encouraging your thoughts, on a soothing French blue palette. Blue, we’re told, is the color most conducive to new ideas.

jf-notepad-busybee

For the list maker, we have our Busy Bee. In fresh green to provide a buzz of energy — and, incidentally, that classic Palm Beach color combo, pink and green.

Each pad contains 75 tearaway pages, and a luxe smooth paper stock to let your pencil glide. Order one, or both, online here. Tuck in a matching pen — we favor those slim Japanese LePens that come in a rainbow of colors — and our notepads make a great hostess gift for just $7.50 each.

Thank YOU Serendipity Magazine!
January 22nd, 2014

Serendipity Magazine, the lifestyle magazine for Fairfield and Westchester County, ran a lovely story on the art of thank you notes in their last issue — and imagine our delight to see our little Whale “Thanks Tons” card feature in such a nice collection.

jfalkner-whale-intro

jfalkner-whale

It’s always a treat for us to see our cards in the hands of a talented photographer, and we love the pretty composition of pens and paper against a mint green background. So fresh!

Probably there is some etiquette about getting your thank you cards out in a timely manner, but we think January is generally one of those dreary months when any bit of mail, whenever it arrives, is always welcome!

So sit yourself down with a box of thank you cards (which could always be ours if you wanted to order them right here), and thank Aunt Ethel for those Christmas wool socks …

Planting a Kiss in People Stylewatch!
December 16th, 2013

jfalkner-stylewatch-dec13

Just when we thought the holiday season couldn’t get more merry, we find ourselves in People Stylewatch’s annual holiday gift guide!

We’ve witnessed first-hand the curating that goes into one of these major gift guides: imagine the best ever pop up store suddenly materialising in a large conference room, but then imagine whittling all these goodies down to only the very best. So we couldn’t be more thrilled that our Lipstick Kiss Little Notes made the cut! (See below, top right.)

jfalkner-stylewatch-page

Of course, kisses are especially nice over the holidays (like our playful Mistletoe Christmas card, below) …

jfalkner-mistletoe

… but a little box of our Lipstick Kiss notes (see below) makes for a great gift year ’round. I always have a spare box handy in my emergency gift drawer … they are perfect for your party hostess, or your niece’s birthday. Find them at select retailers, or order some for yourself from our online store here.

Our New Calendar: The Perfect Little Gift
December 4th, 2013

calendar-front

Once again, December has snuck up on me — but this year I mind a little less, because it means just one more month until I can pop open our new Colorful Quotes Desk Calendar.

We’ve gathered some of our most popular quote cards, mixed in a few new ones for added spice, and are delighted to serve up 12 months of wit and wisdom — an eclectic collection that ranges from Oscar Wilde to Coco Chanel, and from Jack Kerouac to Pablo Neruda (see below).

quotes-composite

The solid, but lightweight, CD construction means they couldn’t be easier to mail out to long-distance friends — or slip into a Christmas stocking. Because what could be nicer than a little gift that provides a pop of color and conversation all year long?

calendar-beyourself

And at just $12.95, they’re the perfect multipurpose gift to have on hand. Order yours at our online store here, or find them at retailers nationwide. (For example, Annie’s Blue Ribbon in Brooklyn, Parker & Otis in Durham, NC or Stationer on Sunrise here in Palm Beach.)

My! Mr. Reindeer, What Amazing Eyes You Have
November 14th, 2013

reindeer

We’re pretty sure that reindeer don’t fly, but it seems that snowy nights do bring out a bit of magic in these animals. Scientists have recently learned that, in what might be a unique talent, reindeer actually change their eye color over the course of the year.

In summer, their eyes are a golden yellow as this allows as much summer light through to the retina as possible. But in winter, they become blue to filter the light and allow better perception in low light levels … hello, wolf lurking in the snowy artic shadows.

Which means those reindeer might not have needed Rudolph quite so much on that famous wintry crossing long ago. Who knows? Personally, I’m delighted that there are still new things to be discovered about the animals around us … now how about those reindeer games?

reindeergames

“Reindeer games” (above) is a new card for the holidays, but we also have several other reindeer cards in stock (below) ready at our online store, or to be found at a retailer near you.

jfalkner-holiday-rdrpt

… Because who says reindeer don’t make it down to the tropics during their Christmas trips?

reindeer-meagain

“Yes, It’s Me Again” (above) was one of our first holiday designs and remains one of our most popular.

jfalkner-hdy-rdrgrp2

This card (above) was inspired by the famous poem, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”.

You can find all our holiday cards here, or just email us at info@jfalkner.com and we’ll help find a retailer near you.

And for those intrepid enough to read this post to the end, we’d like to offer you a special holiday discount of 20% off your entire online purchase. Just use the code HDY2 – but quick, it expires 1 December.

Holiday Safari Surprise (and special discount!)
November 7th, 2013

giraffe1

We all like a good surprise, and here’s a happy one. We’ve always loved giraffes — we have a birthday card, and even a notepad — and thought well why not try one on a holiday card. (I photographed the inquisitive giraffe, above, at the Lion Country Safari Park in Wellington, Florida.)

It’s true giraffes aren’t exactly in the snowy family of animals, but we like holiday cards with a touch of eccentricity. So our giraffe cantered merrily through the design process, and became one of my personal favorites (the final design, below).

But who knew our stores would so heartily agree? The red-nosed giraffe is now one of our most popular new cards of the festive season!

giraffe-xmas

Or perhaps we should have known the giraffe would be popular. After all, one of last year’s winners was his neighbour on the African plains, the Zebra — who is available again this season.

Check out all our holiday cards here. And as loyal readers of our blog, we want to extend a special holiday discount to you. Simply enter the code HDY2 at checkout for a 20% discount. (Good until 1 December.) Happy shopping!

London Trend Alert: Foxes
October 13th, 2013

fox-hackett

I’ve recently had the good fortune to visit London for a few research trips, and one visual motif has silently padded into each exhibition hall, or retail space I’ve visited. Nearly ten years since England banned foxhunting, the wily red fox has turned the tables and taken over London design. (Above, a detail from the Hackett store on Regent’s Street.)

fox-topdrawer

September’s Topdrawer London, the pre-eminent gift show in the city, included a veritable forest of squirrels and hedgehogs, as on these pillows, but the fox was always the star.

fox-logo

At 100% Design, the UK’s largest design trade event, a dominant color trend was pairing neutral organic colors against vivid brights — for example, this scarlet side table anchored by walnut legs (above). And naturally, a red fox, adorning this logo, was right at home. (Treat your eyes and check out Young & Norgate’s gorgeous collection of handmade furniture here.)

fox-decorativefair

A month later I was at the Decorative Antiques and Textile Fair in Battersea. A treasure trove of unusual statement pieces it is a must-attend for London decorators. This mounted fox (above) was one of several I saw that day (though admittedly he looks none too happy about it).

Fortunately, it seems like the fox has cross-atlantic appeal, because one of our bestselling birthday cards at the moment just so happens to feature … a fox (see below).
